Photographer's Note

The plain tombstone of the grave of Bertolt Brecht (next to that of his wife Helene Weigel) in a snowy March afternoon in Berlin.

Bertolt Brecht was a unique poet, theatre director and playwright that had a huge effect in theatrical composition and production who lived from 1898 to 1956. One of his original and influential ideas was that of "epic theatre" that he employed mainly through the plays of the couple's theatre company "Berliner Ensemble", proposing that the spectator should always be critical of what is happening on stage and should not identify himself emotionally with the action. Thus, while directing, he employed methods to "remind" the spectator that he/she is a spectator, such as the enstrangement/distancing effect using lights, songs or other ways to interrupt the flow of action.

The title of the photo is from his poem "Pleasures":
First look from morning's window
The rediscovered book
Fascinated faces
Snow, the change of the seasons
The newspaper
The dog
Showering, swimming
Old music
Comfortable shoes
New music
Writing, planting
Being friendly

Der erste Blick aus dem Fenster am Morgen
Das wiedergefundene Buch
Begeisterte Gesichter
Schnee, der Wechsel der Jahreszeiten
Die Zeitung
Der Hund
Die Dialektik
Duschen, Schwimmen
Alte Musik
Bequeme Schuhe
Neue Musik
Schreiben, Pflanzen
Freundlich sein

About the photo: Well, little to say. A bit of a difficult shot, because of wind and snow. I liked very much the patterns of the four main colours: the red and orange of the brick wall, the greys of the tombstone and the white patterns of snow, hence chose to zoom on the tombstone.
