Heidelberg Bridge Monkey

This is the Heidelberg Bridge Monkey (Heidelberger Brckenaffe), a bronze statue of a monkey installed next to the Old Bridge (Alte Brcke) in 1979, but the story of the Bridge Monkey dates back to the 15th century, when a stone statue of a monkey was located in the bridge tower. This monkey mocked the Bishops of the nearby city of Mainz and its mirror encouraged critical self-reflection. The statue disappeared in the Nine Years War. The new sculpture was made by German sculptor Gernot Rumpf.
