Photographer's Note
This is a night version of my first chimera picture taken from the towers of Notre-Dame for which I received some nice comments.
The night was not as deep as I wanted but this undefined night & day may be interesting for the Chimera creature.

Let me the first of many; WOW!
('Wow' of course because of the excellent color of the sky, the burn-in of the distant lights, and of course your inspired positioning of the main subject.)

I won't be the first, and probably also not the last to say... Wow!
Perfect powerful angle and a very attractive balance between the beautiful natural light of an early evening and the city lights. 6 out of 5!

Superbe, vraiment une très belle image, digne d'une carte postale ! l'exposition est parfaite, et tu as su choisir le meilleur moment pour declencher, quand le ciel n'est encore pas trop sombre... bravo !

"The night was not as deep as I wanted but this undefined night & day may be interesting for the Chimera creature"
I love it just the way it is, the gargoyle has a menacing look about it, but if you do want to alter a sky, it's quite a simple matter with Photoshop, I've done a quick workshop for you to compare.

(143) 2003-07-21 6:02
I like this one even more than yesterday's, given the strong subject in the foreground. I also like Mike's workshop idea.
One thing waiting a little later would have done was bring out the colours on the busy streetcorner (pastel purples and blues, it appears) more, as well as on the monuments. But this is already a striking image as it is. Awesome!

Great shot! Nice and evil looking Gargouille. Seems some Paris virgin won't see the next sunrise. Now buy a tripod and get a higher viewpoint ( so you get more of the city.)

The trip was worth it many times more, Steven. Simply wonderful. Of course now we would ask you to bring a staning ladder a longer tripod so you can take one from the gargoyle point of view :)

This is just great Steven. Every element works very well here, the gargoyle (chimera?), the sky and the city all stand out nicely, yet blend together well at the same time. Very nice, I really have nothing constructive to add.

As all the previous comments have said, this is a superb photo. I like the semi-night light, and the composition is perfect. Of course, the next thing you need to do is to capture this scene in a thunderstorm and line up the lightning 1/3 in from the right, and have it striking the Eiffel tower....

I can't add much that hasn't already been said, but congratulations on a great shot.
You worry about the night not being as deep as you'd wanted seems unfounded. This is the perfect time to have photographed this. The light is the sky makes it interesting and also illuminates areas of the city which would otherwise have been invisible if it were darker. Amazing!!

It's not too late to coongratulate you for such an original shot. The sky turquoise color is stunning as well as the details down on the Seine quays. The chimera is also a very well exposed piece of art. One of my favorites.

Anyway, 5 stars fot composition and exposure.

On a pic like this I must say a word too, even if the pic says all. It's all perfect: the statue, the town and amazing sky. The Eifel's tower makes incredible balance to the statue. One of 10 best shots on TE. The pic deserves to be edited in all best magazines on the world.

The gargoyle presiding over the most 'romantic' city on earth. An interesting angle and the lights work well below. You seem to have captured some of the most well known and essential elements of Paris. The image is sharp, I am not sure about the composition.

Brilliant Photograph. I love the colors, the fact that it's not over exposed and that you have the panorama of the whole city in the picture.
Well spotted, and well executed. I've added this as a favorite!
I love to see the skyline of Paris. It's so different then other cities. No skyscrapers, no tall buildings, the rooftops make a wonderful texture. I read somewhere that it was due to the massive amount of tunneling in the soft rocks below Paris - that this precludes the firm foundations necessary to build tall buildings.
This image, of any I've seen, is one of the best of Paris. Wonderful job.

Two things drove me for a two pointer here...
First, the statue almost perfectly resembles of myself when I critique photos I totally distaste.
Second, it is a great photo indeed with superb use of DoF even in 5.2 you have it all clear!

HI,
well... this is a superb photo ... a night photo that is not saturated ... i'm curious .. how can the lights not be saturated ? only choosing the right exposition ? my photo was with 0,5s and the lights become 'over-exposed' but yours is 1s and is 'perfect'...

I have been to this very spot and it was well worth the climb. However, my photo pales in comparision to this! The colors in the sky contrast so nicely with the warm lights on the gargoyle, and the clarity of the city below is brilliant. Well done!!!!

Steven, this is an awesome shot, it is of course masterfully executed but the composition is exceptional and not at all post card like, the detail is so crisp and the colors are so warm, great capture.

A perfect shot Steven,as is proved by the many, many glowing comments.
The lighting, colours and clarity are wonderful.
The sky is a beautiful colour which complements the ochre coloured stone of the gargoyle.

Great shot! I think this is the perfect time of the day to get a good photo. Less light and you don't get that level of detail in the city. I think the balance is great between the light in the creature, the city, the city lights and the sky...! One of the little improvement could be the bridge in the bottom of the photo... it could appear a little more along with the river...! But that's a little little little detail that doesn't matter!
This photo is Fantastic!!! Congratulations

Lovely capture here. The exposure is spot on.
My only thought is, would you try using a tripod and longer exposure that would alter the background.

Bonjour Steven,
this is an amazing image.
Mask / chimera / devil/does not look kindly on the night city.
For me,it's a lot of allegory in this picture.
An interesting capture of the night streets of Paris near the Seine, after a dark belt, and only the lights of the Eiffel Tower.
Best regards and greeting from Poland Tomas

C'est ca qui est génial dans la photo, c'est réussir à capturer CE moment... Le Night & Day avec les lumières sur la ville, whaou !!! La chimère en contre plongée et illuminée. Tout y est pour un bon cliché.
Bravo le photographe... Chapeau

Very impressive picture!
Composition of colour, and lighting create a harmony atmosphere.
The dramatic POV somehow looks like a movie poster.
