Photographer's Note
A wide-angle photo taken last Autumn, while standing on Toulouse's Pont Neuf, looking west towards the Saint-Cyprien 'quartier'. The building on the near left is the Hotel Dieu St-Jacques, the headquarters of Toulouse's hospitals and centre of the European Institute of Telemedicine. Beyond it can be seen the green-ish dome of the Hôpital de la Grave, which is three times the size of the Hotel Dieu, standing on the left bank of the Garonne beside the Pont Saint-Pierre. Just beyond that bridge lies a small 'waterfall' in the shallow reaches of the Garonne, where water is diverted to generate hydro electricity in the turbines of the Bazacle - the Bazacle is the pale yellow building visible beneath the second span of the bridge from the right. On this cold day, the scudding Autumn clouds made such a reflection in the river that it seemed like Toulouse was afloat in the sky.

Hello Andrew,
This is a stunning composition, looking almost unreal. The effect of the clouds reflected in the wide space of water is overwhelming. A technically superb photo as well.

Hello Andrew,
A spectacular panoramic composition that extracts the best from the lovely reflections offered by the still waters of the river. The subdued lighting and muted tones contributes much to the mood of the image. Thanks also for the useful and interesting note.

hi Andrew,
good capture of a place I know well ; you made a nice reflection job using the mirror of the Garonne... it seems that the buildings are set on the sky.
It gives a good feeling.

Hello Andrew,
It's good to see you posting. We don't see enough of your work, these days.
Your title, whilst creating curious interest, perfectly describes what can be seen in the photograph. Only the bridge prevents the illusion that the building is floating away!
A great dof keeps the building sharp, whilst the composition follows the rule of thirds.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Bonjour Andrew
Une architecture bien calée entre le ciel et son reflet parfait.Les teintes de la ville rose créent le bon contraste avec ce pont sur la Garonne.
Bonne journée

Hello Andrew,
You have given us a very interesting and exhaustive note here as well as a very fine photograph. And yes, I do recall your having uploaded a series of photographs from Toulouse, including the Pont Neuf, several months ago. And, now that I look back at those, I think this picture was taken around the same time as those.
Gosh, I can well believe that this was a cold day - but it was also a wonderfully clear one because the visibility into the far distance is stunning. The sky is mirrored perfectly in the waters of the Garonne with apparently little decrease in brightness too which is really remarkable - and I presume that you didn't use an ND graduated filter here.
And, of course, the fact that the sky and its reflections are so equal does make it appear as though the whole city is floating in mid-air!
Excellent composition, perfect exposure, fine colours and absolutely exquisite details and sharpness.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Andrew,
il riflesso del cielo nuvoloso sull'acqua del fiume è il punto forte di questa foto.
Sembra che la città sia sospesa tra le nuvole.
Well done!

Hi Andrew
The title is apt. Picture with strong focal afforded by that wonderful mirror reflections on the still water and powerful cloud formations in the 'angry' sky It looks very much like nature was painting the sky and float the cityscape to set different scene. Very impressive cloudfall and has a great contrast to the blue from the sky, something i don't often see. Structure and detail in the clouds is amazing, just as the play with light and shadow. A glorious happenings made your day for sure. Marvelous capture, TFS
Kind regards

Hello Andrew
Yes I have changed to a Canon and still playing around with it, now wondering why I changed from my trusty Pentax, but anyway I'm sure it will be worth it in the end.
This is a wonderful mirror image of the captured scene which appears to be floating on a cloud. Well done
Cheers Peter

Hi Andrew,
first, and in spite of the delay, I want to congratulate you in your 7th Anniversary on TE.
In this magnificent composition you have played skillfully with the beauty of the clouds and of the architecture of the building and of the bridge, as well as with its reflections on the water, in order to create the sensation that these elements floats on the sky.
I like this graphical reached result, and also the good luminosity and the quality of the colors.
It is a beautiful work.
Best regards,
Josep

Gidday Andrew
Ooh la la, as they say in Toulouse. This is a masterpiece of light and reflections. The silvery tones are magnificent and I love how you positioned the medical HQ to the far left, leaving all that space for the "mirror pond". The light may not have been easy here but you've made mincemeat of it. Congratulations.
Bonne amitiés
