Sully, For Much of The Day, a photo from Ile-de-France, North

Photographer's Note

Hфtel de Sully was originally designed by architect Jean Androuet du Cerceau (Famous French architect 1585 - 1649) in between 1625-1630 for financier Mesme Gallet. And it was purchased by the Duc de Sully Maximilien de Bethune (13 December 1560 – 22 December 1641), the Superintendent of Finances for King Henri IV (13 December 1553 – 14 May 1610) who was assassinated in 1610. The Duc was a staunch Huguenot and the faithful right-hand man of the King. Hфtel de Sully was designated as a "monument historique" in 1862. The building houses today The Centre des Monuments Nationaux in Paris.

One morning in February, I was awakened by an unusually bright light coming through the windows. I looked out and saw this neighbourhood under snow. For as long as I can remember, the Hфtel de Sully has been my favourite site in Paris. Certainly in this neighbourhood, this courtyard as well as the building(s) itself (themselves) seen in the photo is the most intimate and the most beautiful inner court and building(s) that I know in Paris. One could walk through the courtyard and arrive at La Place des Vosges though a small doorway in the right hand side corner. Hфtel de Sully was completely covered by a fresh snow. Having no vehicular circulation near by, the garden remained silent for much of the day.

hi nobu,
this is a very well composed picture. i like your framing through the doorway which is in shadow and creates a very strong dark border. the falling snow is fantastic. excellent sharpness. lovely atmosphere.

The atmosphere of cottony snow days is nice. The framing of your picture is good with the contrast between the dark interior and the exterior covered with snow. A beautiful image with snowflakes and architecture. Bravo.

Hello Nobu - Winter, I can hear the silence. I love the way all sound is muffled when the snow lays thick and there is a feeling of isolation. This shot sums up that feeling for me. Excellent. Warm rehards Rosemary

L'Hфtel de Sully sous la neige est magnifique. C'est vrai que c'est un superbe palais. Le Marais est l'endroit que j'ai prйfйrй. J'avais louй un petit appartement rue du Bourg-Tibourg et j'ai arpentй beaucoup des petites rues de ce quartier.

La premiиre neige crйe toujours une lumiиre particuliиre et je sais toujours avant de me lever que je vais retrouver un tapis blanc au sol. Par la suite, la magie disparaоt un peu je dois dire. Paris sous la neige doit кtre fййrique.

Snowstorm in action, Nobu, collected well with flakes shown clearly in image.
The extra frame enhance the distans, and tell you were quite safe inside a building, not in the cold...

Breath-taking asymmetry! The off-center frame is a perfect balance for the asymmetry of the hotel view here and calls attention to the little door leading to Place des Vosges. The thin layer of snow outlines not only the chimneys but those lovely little dormer windows against the snowy roof. Ah, the luxury of time to notice their beautiful curving frames! I had not noticed that before. Just perfect, Nobu!

to be a good photographer should know well the techniques of composition, as the great Renaissance painters built fantastic scenarios in their paintings. On the other hand, photography is perhaps not the daughter of the painting? In this beautiful winter image you have shown to know well this technique. The architectural beauty of the palace, the suggestion of this big snowfall, the natural frame of the wall and the good photo quality help to make this image a true masterpiece. A very pretty shot taken through the doorway. I like the way the snow has covered the ground like a thick blanket. Looks like fairy tale world. The place looks so desolate creating an eerie feeling. Wonderful mood .

I think the grainy snow snowflakes are on these wonderful courtyards.
You use the frame of the window as black frame your your picture.
Also a nice architecture picture with the backside of the building.
Sharpness and clarity are very attractive.

A picture of the famous Hotel with the snow falling. The framing with the stone doorway acts well for us to 'peek' into the scene. I would have wished you to have a slightly lower POV...so that the roof was not cut off. There's a 'sound' of silence here quite palpable. A scene which makes me feel cold!

With your photos we are always given the impression of a bystander viewing a scene and this is particularly the case with this photo, with the door frame. I love the muted colours, so typically Leica and so wintry. Lovely composition, I hope you are trying to relax a little.

During my absence you've posted half a dozen superb shots. The image of Hфtel de Suly is among the most eye catching with he natural dark frame by the portal. The snow on the ground and snow flakes descending add immensely to the photo, and your essay to place the edifice in its historical context.
