Photographer's Note

St Pierre Church, Collonges-la-Rouge, district of Corrze.

Two aspects in particular struck me when visiting Saint Peter's Church of Collonges-la-Rouge.

First, the stark white 12th century tympanum contrasts with the red sandstone rocks. In addition to color, the tympanum is remarkable for its elegant sculptures. They contrast with the austere style of the church, which has been fortified. The tympanum is in exceptional state of preservation since it had been hidden since the Wars of Religion (sixteenth century) until his replacement in 1923.

Another feature that I find particularly beautiful: during the wars of religion, the place of worship was used alternately by Catholics and Protestants. However, both communities had their own aisle. This portal provides access to the right aisle, novel style, reserved for Protestants. The left aisle, Catholic, is itself Gothic.

Today, the church is Catholic worship.
