Photographer's Note

In the grim time, in September of 1941, Germans were in the beginning of the Siege of Leningrad (now St-Petersburg). City was surrounded and for the certain time there was doubts that it will stand. Thus, the fate of Baltic Fleet, with its 2 battleships, 5 cruisers, tens of destroyers and submarines was balancing on the edge. Ships were stuffed with explosives, and sailors were drilled to be the soldiers. It was a grim time indeed.
Thus, as the disaster seemed unavoidable, Commander of the Baltic Fleet devised a courageous, but also quite mad plan for the submarines - to cross Finnish Gulf, Baltic Sea proper, then cross Danish Straits, enter the Northern Sea and after that move along the German coast of Northern Sea towards Arctic, to join North Fleet operating in Arctic Ocean.
It was a crazy idea, as Danish Straits are only 8,5 meters deep at some points - thus submarines had to move not under water, but on it, with one of the shores being under the German occupation (Denmark was occupied at the time).
Three submarines were chosen to perform this, and even the commander and crew of heavy cruiser "Kirov" was discussing the idea of doing the same.
Luckily, Leningrad defence was strong and it was never taken, and this courageous (and mad) plan was not taken to action.
Well, what all that have to do with a photo? This IS a Danish Strait, near Helsingor, place where Hamlet did what he did (according to Shakespeare). You can see Swedish shores from the Danish one - they are not far. Not far at all, to cross it, mile after mile, in the dark, on the submarine which can not even go under water.
Those were the people, in that times, they were so much braver than we are. They all agreed to this, and somehow I think maybe some of them would be able to do it...
