Photographer's Note

Here you can see the 20th century neo-gothic towers of the 14th century Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in the Czech city of Brno. The cathedral is situated on a hill in an area of narrow streets, so it is almost necessary to find another distant hill to take a photo showing the entire building. I took this photo after leaving the church and going downhill. I liked the green diagonal with a viewing platform and the tall spires seemingly reaching for the sky.

Like most other medieval European cathedrals this one has been rebuilt a number of times. In this particular case one reason was, as often has been the case in this part of Europe, that it was destroyed by Swedish troops in the 17th century.

The point of view is well chosen and the composition agreeably balanced between, greenery, architecture and sky. The people on the platform enliven the scene and provide an interesting secondary focal point. The image is pleasantly illuminated with excellent colours and clarity.

Hello Gert,
Beautiful view of these slim twin spires of the church. They rise up so nicely from behind the trees and their warm tones make them stand out well from the cloudy sky. The viewing platform and the people standing on it add interest to the foreground.

Hello Gert

Brno is a very attractive town a couple hours by bus west of Hodonin, where I was based for 3 months. Wishing I had taken my camera along on the business trip I made to try and get an EU work permit. It was a waste of time as they told me because I was not British I had to apply in Bratislava, Vienna or Berlin. Anyway the twin spires of the cathedral add good symmetry & I like the upward pov. Tfs!

Hello Gert,
Like two spears those towers leading up the viewer, and I can get the notion how difficult it would be for a close range photo.
The lookout point on the slope probably allow good view of the lower area of town, as I see people observing from there.
All three pic.s offer interesting sights around town, found the small park at the foot of the Cathedral on the map, there is a labyrinth small alleys downhill's there:49.191,16.606 on the map.

On dirait bien que c'йtait l'idйe des constructeurs de ces clochers. Ils sont minces et hauts comme des fusйes. Le point de vue en contre plongйe accentue cette impression.

Three wonderful architecture pictures of Brno, a city that is not that well known here. At least not so known as Prague.
The light creates beautiful warm tones on the spires.
Very nice in contrast with the abundant green.
I suggest the view into the other direction must also be beautiful considering that a viewpoint was built.

Excellent composition with the greenery on the diagonal and the sharp spires of the cathedral. Beautiful also the two workshop pictures. Beautiful architecture of the buildings and nice street scenes. I was in Brno but it was a long time ago. I remember mainly that we couldn't find our parked car. We were rather nervous as it was white Skoda. We didn't know the name of the street and noticed only policeman on the corner. But finally it was OK :).

I am back home and slowly I will be more active on TE.

Of the three, the main entry is my favorite. Like you, I like the diagonal that the tree tops create. I also like the towers seeming to grow out of the trees. The observation deck provides a nice focal point and breaks the monotony in the foreground.

Hello Gert,

Three excellent photographs to explain the beauty of this city.
On your main shot, I like the differing green diagonals, creating the stage for the two mighty towers and from which, the balcony seems to be a fine 3D projection.
However, for me, it is w/s2 which gives the greatest pleasure, with its natural leaf border, guiding bridge, wonderful, sunlit buildings and lots of figures to set the narrative.

Hi Gert,

Here I think you celebrated the verticality and the steep grade of the scene. The presence of the people certainly was a wise decision. What is especially successful here is the depth of field. The shrubbery in the foreground is seen with high resolution as are the details of the twin steeples.

Incidentally, I want to thank you for taking the time to write the email to me regarding the state of affairs in "those" police states we had mentioned. I suspect one or two more should be added to the list of "Corruption perception index."

I gotta say, this is a superb compo, its awesome. and yes, the people obviously add to the scene, but for me its the towers jutting out at the top that win me over. wonderful shot

Great composition, it takes some skill to show the architecture, especially such tall spires, and still be able to include some people... ;-)

Gert, the cathedral tall spires stand out from the other buildings in the city. They can be seen from many parts of Brno. They are crowned with a ball and a cross. The mirador located on the hill on the main picture offers a stunning view of the surroundings. Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.
