Atomium - The Eiffel Towers of Brussels.

Built for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo '58), the 103-metre (335-foot) tall Atomium monument represents a unit cell of an iron crystal (body-centred cubic), magnified 165 billion times, with vertical body diagonal, with tubes along the 12 edges of the cube and from all 8 vertices to the centre.

Nine steel spheres 18 metres in diameter connect via tubes with escalators as long as 35 m, among the longest in Europe. Windows in the top sphere provide a panoramic view of Brussels. Other spheres have 1950s exhibitions. Three upper spheres lacking vertical support are not open to the public for safety reasons.

Hi Liliana,
I think the composition in this one works better than the one in TL - I guess due to the closer crop and vertical format..
Though this could be just my personal opinion :-)

Well I live near Belgium just 100 km from Bruxelle but I never seen the Atomium and your photo is so beatiful I'll probably go there to saw it.You choose a good frame and a very good POV.

A Brussels classical, here at that dark hour the tubes between the balls almost completely vanish and with the lights on the balls it looks like some giant christmas decoration !

Hello Liliana -

Now here is one image I would like to have seen in the blue hour. IMO, the golden glow of the city lights is not helping the image. I do like the concept of the image, the symmetry developed with the atom cluster, the streets, and the lights. The other thing I like is the details in the shadows and the reflections off of the autos.

I have seen photos of this colossal monument before, but never as beautiful, and never with the informative note to accompany them. Since I am in the business (theoretical nuclear physics), the image has additional appeal for me. The night time shot is exposed to perfection. The composition and perspective are perfect, as is the resolution.

A beautifull framing for this symbol of the World Fair. It looks much better at night with the lights than during the day, since the tubes linking the atoms are greatly attenuated.

Hi Lili,
The lights give the structure much greater DOF so it really feels like a giant atom. Light management and framing are excellent.

I like this better than any photos I've seen of the structure. Clearly nightime is the time of day to shoot this historical creation; I tried a day shot with disappointing results. HLJ, Pat

I have already seen tons of pictures of the Atomium here at TE, but this really takes it all. The colors and the details are breathtaking. Perfect exposure with minimal overexposure glare on the lamps along the road at the bottom of the image where it doesn't bother at all.

My Dad told me stories about going to the World's Fair in Brussels while he was an American serviceman stationed in Germany in the late '50's. He has old black and white photos of this same structure. It's interesting to see this same structure in color and as a nocturnal. Thanks for sharing.
