THOMAS MONTANUS
Montanus did secondary studies in Bruges, probably with the Jesuits. In October 1634 he began studies in artes at the University of Leuven, where he was enrolled in the pedagogy De Burcht. Perhaps that was when he was first confronted with a plague epidemic. In July 1639 he obtained his degree in medicine. To complete his knowledge, he traveled during a peregrinatio academica in Germany and Italy. On his return he settled in Ghent.
In 1643 he moved to Sint-Winoksbergen and in 1645 became chief physician in the old Sint-Janshospitaal of the town. During the Spanish-French War he was undoubtedly confronted with diseases related to the plague, for he referred to them in his later writings. In 1652 he was appointed physician pensionary of Sint-Winoksbergen.
In July 1655 he registered as a freeman within the Brugse Vrije and in 1656 he came to live in Bruges. On July 16 of that year, he became a pensionary physician of the city of Bruges and a physician at the Sint-Janshospitaal. In 1663 he also became pensionary physician of the Brugse Vrije.
ISAAC DE MEYER
Isaac obtained a surgeon's license in Bruges in 1806. In 1808 he was drawn by lot and took part as a surgeon and carabiner in the battles of Landshut, Eckmühl, Regensburg, Ebersberg, Essling, Wagram and Waterloo. He acquired for himself the name of a good surgeon, who, among other things, was able to amputate very quickly, which inevitably happened without anesthesia. He was proud of his role in these battles and had its name engraved on his tombstone.
De Meyer was especially interested in obstetrics.
In 1814 he obtained the diploma Docteur en Chirurgie de la Faculté de Paris. During the time of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, he established himself as a doctor in Bruges, where he was chairman of the Commission Médicale Provincial and vice-chairman of the Académie Royale de Médecine. He was also the author of many medical-historical publications. De Meyer was a collector of old books and manuscripts. Among other things, he had a copy of the Trotula.
I hope you like it.

Hello John,
Without having seen the original photo and whatever may have looked disturbing, I can say that you made a good decision to crop it neatly like this. Now the proportions are just right and there is a good balance between the statues and the windows. Although the photo shows "dead" objects it has a nice rhythm. I also like the contrasts of dark grey and light brown.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi John,
The subject is well framed. The point of view is showing the details of the scultures of the doctors and of the windows. I like the effect of the rain on the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello John,
I like the symmetrical positioning of the two busts in the frame. If both of these were physicians, why is De Meyer marked as a hygienist?

Hi John
I wonder what this pair would have thought of our current pandemic? A good well balanced photo of the pair.

Hallo John,

Vele groeten, Paul

Hello John,
A good symmetrical framing of the 2 busts on pedestals, with superb sharpness and lighting. The bg posters in the window look interesting. The steely blue grey colour stands out well against the red brick walls in the bg. Tfs!

Hello John,
Nice presentation of these two doctors in a well framed picture and sharp details. Always better to have the opinion of two doctors, just in case.
Best regards

Hello John
Interesting view of these two monuments in the old Sint Jan Hospital. Old hospitals have very interesting architecture - why not show the whole building?
Fine presentation.

Hi John,
It is interesting to see that these two doctors lived humdred years away from each other and yet their monuments are in the same style next to each other.
Very eye pleasing symmetrical composition.
Great work,
M
