BRUGES.
The Jan van Eyckplein is a square in the centre of Bruges. The square, located at the beginning of the Spiegelrei, was built shortly after 1787, when the so-called New Year's or Sint-Jansbrug was demolished and a first part of the Kraanrei was vaulted.
Description:
Before the construction of the square, the New Year's Bridge was an extension of the Wijnzakstraat. This bridge was mentioned in 1282 and was initially made of wood. In 1389 it was rebuilt in white Brabant stone and decorated with two polychrome statues of the evangelist Saint John. It was rebuilt in 1444 as a three-tier arch bridge with stone parapet.
Originally there was no square to be seen, but the reie continued, with a bridge above it that bore the name Sint-Jansbrug, or also New Year's bridge, because a market for sweets and children's toys was held on the bridge around New Year. In 1787 the Reie was vaulted at that spot and the Sint-Jansbrug was demolished. This created a square that initially continued to bear the name Sint-Jansbrug.
In French times, the name 'Academieplaetse' gradually came into use, after the drawing and painting academy that was located in the Poortersloge. In 1844 the city council introduced the name 'Jan van Eyckplaats', as a tribute to the painter Jan van Eyck, who was given a marble statue there in 1856, after a design by Jan-Robert Calloigne. This statue was removed in 1871, after which it stood on the Burg for a century. The inauguration of the current statue on a high bluestone plinth from 1878, designed by Hendrik Pickery, was the reason for the restoration with a city grant of several houses on this square.
I hope you like it

Hallo John,
Een prachtig gezicht op deze gevels met vele details, sommige breed, sommige heel smal en de meeste met aantrekkelijke baksteenarchitectuur. Het standbeeld is ook een goede toevoeging aan de linkerkant.

Hello John.
This is a fine collection of beautiful façades. The are of a similar style but they are all differently designed and of different sizes. They give the square a lively and dynamic look, which is further enhanced by the statue and the people seen here and there. Good exposure and fine colours.
Best regards,
Gert

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hi John,
beautiful spot! I think I showed the square from the other side and from a distance. Here we benefit from the closer view, the facades of the old houses are so beautiful. The monument adds a nice touch. We can see people wearing thick jackets, it was cold. The sky is also indicating a cold cloudy season.
Beautiful final effect. Excellent work,
M

Hello John,
You give us lots of information about the area, which does have a long, interesting history.
You chose a very good vantage point for your photograph, for I feel that if you had placed the statue in front of these tall, very decorative buildings, it would have been lost. As it is placed now, we can appreciate both the statue and the building facades.
These buildings really are remarkable; they are so very different and yet each is built and decorated to be pleasing to the eye.
I wish you and your family and Happy Christmas,
Bev :-)

Hi John,
A sharp and and well composed photo, with the statue of van Eyck prominent on the left and the beautiful building facades on the right. Jan van Eyck is one of my favourite painters.

Hello John, so many beautiful facades so close to each other, what a gift to a photographer.
You have managed an incredibly sharp shot.
The colours, textures and patterns that we see are excellent.
I notice that this was taken 5 years ago, and only now you share it.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Hello John,
Beautiful different style facades of the buildings. Some are very rich some not but all have opportunity to face main square. Looking at these buildings, brick was the main building material in those days.
Great photo as well as colors, light and sharpnwss.
John, happy and healthy New Year 2021 to you and your family.

Hi John
It must be a lively iconic landmark with good detail captured both on the statue and the classic buildings face. I love how the patina holds the focus hence binding the elements handsomely. Excellent shot, hoping for a much better year ahead.
Best wishes
