This visit during Covid-19 to Hoeke part of Damme, this is allowed in Belgium at the moment
My bike ride went past Hoeke a polder village with a beautiful Mill.
Hoekemolen. (dutch)
The Hoekemolen is a windmill in the village of Hoeke, which is part of the West Flemish municipality of Damme, at Natiënlaan 21.
It is a round stone mill of the ground sailor type, which functioned as a flour mill.
History
Hoeke had its own mill of the standerd mill type that was mentioned in 1324, but went down in a flood. The residents now had to have their grain ground at the Oostmolen in Oostkerke, a mill that was first mentioned in 1405. Before 1481 this post mill was transferred from Oostkerke to Hoeke. This mill was destroyed during the Wars of Religion at the end of the 16th century. In 1627 there was a new mill. It suffered from Spanish and in 1702 from State troops.
In 1839 the former post mill was completely destroyed by storm. A new stone mill was built in 1840. A mechanical mill was added to the company in 1930. There was less and less wind milling and the mill fell into disrepair. In the 1930s, the Belgian State built the Natiënlaan, along which the increasingly busy traffic from the inland to the coast was diverted. The State also bought the mill in 1936 and restored the exterior in 1937. However, the mill could no longer grind. In 1981 the mill was protected as a monument and its surroundings as a protected village view. In 1985 the mill was made operational again.
In 1999 the mill came into the ownership of the Flemish Region and in 2001 it was granted a long lease to the Flemish Heritage Foundation, later called Herita vzw.

Hello John,
This photo has the atmosphere of late autumn. The light is limited and the colours are fairly dark, but considering the conditions of northern Europe at this time of the year you have taken a photo of fine clarity and distinct contrasts. And the windmill is beautiful and is nicely seen against the dull sky.
Best regards,
Gert

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello John,
Well, you have given us some extensive, interesting details about this mill.
How good to know that it has now been made operational again and that it is a protected building.
Windmills are iconic to the lowlands and this looks like a fine example.
Your photograph is sharp and well composed, giving excellent details of the windmill and its setting, despite the low light levels on this November day.
My warm regards,
Bev 😊

Hi John
Intriguing location by the roadside and indeed hard to miss this prominent landmark which is perfectly fitting the frame. This is superbly exposed and coloured to optimum where green and brown seem to marry harmoniously creating a striking contrast enhancing the overall impact. A well done shot and pleasure to view, Congrats
Best regards

Hello John,
It looks bleak and cold. The windmill has been well framed and composed and sharpness is impeccable. I like the diffused light and muted pastel colours, too. Tfs!

Hello John,
Autumn grey sky did not ruin the beauty of this windmill, picture is clera and distinct in details.
Ancient wisdom to employ wind to humen needs.

It is good to see that bad weather does not stop you from making healthy bike trips. They always offer great photo opportunities which you use very well.
The windmill is so attractive full of old style decorative elements.

Hallo John,
Een uitstekende foto van deze witte molen. De wieken steken mooi af tegen de bewolkte lucht. Ook het oude gebouw aan de rechterkant staat er goed op.

Hello John,
The interesting old mill, it looks that could still work, it has complete wings. The old building from 1923 is also nice with the red roof. Nice composition.

Hello John,
Really a beautiful windmill shown here, from what you said that windmill has really been through many things throughout its history. Thank you for telling us a little bit about these stories and sharing knowledge about this incredible place. The photo itself is very beautiful, the mood of the day an air of mystery in the photo. It must be very pleasant to go out cycling and come across places like this in the photo.
Greetings from Brazil

Hi John.
Interesting note, which tells us about the many vicissitudes passed by the mills in this place throughout the ages, this one that seems the last one adds its beauty and charm to the place.
An image to enjoy, with its beautiful coloring, great luminosity and perfect sharpness.
Superbly captured. I love.
Happy start to the week.
Very best regards.
Luis.
