History of the small bridge in foreground:
The statue of Johannes Nepomucenus in Bruges
Johannes Nepomucenus was born between 1340 and 1350 in the village of Pomuk in Bohemia. His parents must have been fairly prosperous, as he was able to study at the local monastery, later in Prague, and even at the University of Padua. In 1380 he became a parish priest in Prague.
He also preached repeatedly in the Domkerk and his wise and intelligent sermons made people come from far and wide to listen to him.
His performance did not escape the attention of the then King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia. At the time, Wenceslaus was feared by his tyrannical behavior towards anyone who disagreed with him. To bind John to him, he offered him a job at court.
Johannes refused the offer. According to tradition, he only accepted the office of the Queen's personal confessor, Sophia of Bavaria. Since there was an open conflict between Church and Court since 1384, this decision was not well received.
The king wanted revenge. On March 20, 1393, Johannes was arrested during negotiations between Church and Court. That same night he was horribly tortured and thrown and drowned from the Charles Bridge in the Vltava. The real reasons for this horrifying act remain vague, but Wenceslaus is said to have become furious when John had refused to reveal whether or not the Queen had confessed to having a lover.
I hope you like it

Hi John
I've said it many times, Belgium seems to have so many photogenic quaint little towns like this. Looks very safe and easy for tourists, its what we enjoy. lots of buildings to enjoy here, lots of warm light, friendly atmosphere, and old stone bridges. good one. cheers

Hallo John, that district in Bruges is teeming with activity. The coming and going of the river boats loaded with tourists, the passersby animate the place. The bridge history is well summarized in the photo note. Nice glimpse of the local architecture. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hello John,
I thought this was from this year, so I was about to write that it looks like normal days are back. Unfortunately they are not, so let this nice photo remind us of the days when we could enjoy life in the streets relaxed and without fear. It's a lively photo from a famous place and with beautiful light and colours.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi John,
beautiful weather day and great colors! I see plenty of people in the street and boat tours so I thought straight away it must be an old photo :)
Great point of view with the vivid reflection in the canal. The tree adds a nice aspect too.

Hello John,
King Wenceslas is called ‘Good King Wenceslas’ in the Christmas Carols but he doesn’t sound very good in your notes!
The mood in this photograph, from your archives, is very different from your most recent posts!
The streets and canal are full of tourists, all enjoying the scenery and the weather.
You have chosen a fine viewpoint where the tourist boats and the busy street lead to the bridge, strongly placed in your composition.
The exposure is sharp and the colours reflective of the lovely weather.
My warm regards,
Bev 😊

Hello John, the rippled water provides a lovely texture as well as reflecting the light, and immediately attracts my attention before I begin to study the rest of the scene.
The buildings are so beautiful in Bruges, I always enjoy seeing them.
Lots of people to animate the picture all set beneath a blue sky, lovely work.
Kind regards, Jean.

Saint John of Nepomuk is also the saint patron of the region of Lower Silesia in Poland and in the Czech Republic, you can see many statues and sculptures there, a very nice picture of the picturesque Bruges, great summer atmosphere

Hello John
So did the queen have an affair? I guess abuse of power can be found anywhere. Good to see the summer days can be enjoyed even though the dead mans statue is there for all to see. ;)

Hello John,
A fascinating note about Johannes Nepomucenus and, of course, we see his statue on the bridge in the distance in your lovely photograph.
This is indeed a truly delightful photograph and joyful too with boats packed with tourists enjoying time out on the water and groups of people on the roadway and pavements enjoying the bright sunny weather in a perfect setting and surrounded by beautiful architecture.
But unfortunately this was in 2015 but now, in 2020, life will not be so happy here - these streets and boats will be empty and the city will appear dead. But hopefully things will get better soon.
A very beautiful photograph indeed!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hallo John,

Vele groeten, Paul

Hi John,
Nice to see a Bruges canal view again. You have a good timing with those two boats passing each other. Low angle is excellent.

Hi John
A historic and very touristy location by the canal. I like the firm presence of the moving boats and human activity, wealth of colours and plenty of features to make the eye busy. Excellent shot.

Hi John.
A spectacular view of this channel so crowded, that it already has the beauty of the buildings and the bridge and that so many people give it a festive look, beautiful sky.
A fantastic photo, with beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent sharpness.
Enjoy the weekend.
Very best regards.
Luis.
