Photographer's Note
This is temporarily the last one winter picture, 50.000 visitors, skaters and walkers together, between Bruges and Sluis .
This Napoleon canal is 15 km long, with one big interruption at the Siphon on 7 km of Bruges
I have this picture taken against the evening against the sunset. This was the last hours of the ice pleasure.
History:
A study by Federico Formenti of the University of Oxford suggests that the earliest ice skating happened in Southern Finland about 4000 years ago. Originally, skates were merely sharpened flattened of bone strapped to the bottom of the foot. Skaters did not actually skate on the ice, but rather glided on top of it. True skating emerged when a steel blade with sharpened edges was used. Skates now cut into the ice instead of gliding on top of it. Adding edges to ice skates was invented by the Dutch in the 13th or 14th century. These ice skates were made of steel, with sharpened edges on the bottom to aid movement. The construction of modern ice skates has stayed largely the same.
I hope you like it.

Hey John,
Nice wide angle view of the skating area and the sunset - good exposure control!
What I mostly like abuot this photo is the little kid right underneath the perspective line, which draw most of my attention due to it's location and star-like form...
Thanks for sharing this wintry scene!

Bonjour John ,
Oui , cette scène évoque un tableau hollandais , avec tous ces petits personnages . Très joli , dans la lumière du soir . Un spectacle qui durera encore longtemps , si le climat ne se réchauffe pas sous nos lattitudes .

Hi John,
I like the deep perspective of the trees and the frozen canal in your setting. The festive environment that the skaters and walkers offer us in this place gives a good dynamism to the scene.
The luminosity and the tones of the sunset are wonderful, this one is a very attractive and elegant composition, which looks like a painting.
Great work, my friend.

Goede morgen John,
Prettige dag,

Yes indeed, John, a pure Bruegel landscape. It's absolutely impressive how we are being guided deep inside the picture, as if we didn't have any other choice. It simply takes over our concentration. Furthermore, your image is full of interesting details and outstanding dynamics. Wonderful!

Hoi, John.

An excellent title, this is clearly the same kind of theme which inspired the diffrent painters of this family (except than the colors of the cloths were less bright in that time: mostly black and brown). But you also managed to catch a beautifull color in the sky in the background, which adds a lot to counter balance the cold effect of the ice.
All the best,

Hi, John -
When I think of Brueghel, browns are the first colors that come to mind, but I do see the resemblance here in his use of colorful peasants and country scenes, though I don't specifically recall any iced rivers in his paintings.
All that aside, this is a splendid photo, with the people grouped in prime locations and being active, the lines of trees and ice leading to a gorgeous sunset sky. I do have a bit of a problem with the slight wide angle distortion, but that's nothing much.
Best,

Hi John,
"Breughel paintings" is something that abounds in your gallery. You are a master at photographically exploring these canals border with trees, using the wonderful light in a fascinating way. I like also to see all those people enjoying the cold day and the ice; it's remarkable how they don't make any clutter and are part of the charm of the image instead.
Regards, José.

Hello Dear John,
I join the chorus of admirers of this superb shot, complemented by a highly informative note. The title even is also enticing, I can see a Breughel painting here. The composition, light management, subject, colors, resolution are all flawless, making this the Modern Flemish Master, John Maenhout.

Hi John. Every time i come back to your gallery i feel that I have missed out by not dropping in more regularly.Such beautiful winter scenes. And this one is like a painting, one with hints of Breughel. It is assuring that despite technological advances, people's pleasures are still linked with those of their forefathers. Glorious light, exceptional depth towards the vanishing point and beautiful colours. Masterful and a joy to look at. Klaudio.

Hi, John,
I see in your work three elements that are essential in a master:
(1) A strong "eye" for the photographic moment.
(2) Excellent technical skill with attention to the finest details.
(3) Commitment to hard work over long time periods.
While no great student of art history, I can see the echoes of Breughel in your use of people in this image.
The strong geometric lines in the boundaries of the canal and the bare trees draw the viewer wonderfully from the groups of people in the foreground back to this very attractive sunset. And we enjoy the journey along the canal, as you have populated the image with individuals and small groups of people with just enough detail to give a real sense of living in this moment.
One last detail to note: the very pleasant reflection of the sunset sky in the ice along the center line of the canal.
Outstanding!

Hi John,
What a sublime image of this wintery wonderland. It is wonderful to see so many people outdoors and enjoying themselves here in the cold. My grandmother fondly tells me stories about ice skating on lakes in rivers during her childhood in the Netherlands. I can see now how it can bring the community together. Here in the subtropics, any ice skating is done indoors, and it's a bit of an odd feeling to go from 30C outside, stepping into 0C inside. Delightful composition here with the clusters of people, scratched ice and glowing sky.

One would say it's a painting by a Flemish artist. Well yes, that's it ! Beautiful perspective with the trees disappearing in diagonal into the sunset.
Lovely dynamism created by all the skaters. You also caught the texture of the ice very well. I just hope it's strong enough !
With warming globing, do your canals freeze enough to skate every winter ?

Hi John,
The light in this is really exquisite, it like the trees are shining this golden arc over the world to try to counter the light blues of the ice. The light really was good to you this day to align itself so perfectly indie your frame. The sense of fun from the people is wonderful too. Really beautiful shot.
Thanks as always
Noel

Hello John,
the landscape and the scene integrated in it are very lovely, your composition is solid and dynamic, the perspective leads us very deep into the frame, touches the sunset. There are many interesting little scenes to observe along the frozen canal. The colours and the atmosphere are exquisite, there are fine contrasts and graduations, the mild warm reflection on the ice is a superb touch. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
Ourania

Hello John,
The iced-over canal leading to the sunset is very inviting. I think I would want to skate here, too.

Hi John,
again I missed one of your most popular photos on TE.
I wish they would make even more search options to allow for example finding the most popular photos of a given TE member etc
But of course now the site is rather dying out and they don't want even to repair some lost features so it is not possible to expect new features being added.
Indeed this view may make us think of the famous painting with the people enjoying ice skating.
Brilliant light with the setting sun at the back and so much action in the foreground,
Excellent work,
M

Hello John,
Like the Netherlands, Belgium also has canals that turn into ice skating in winter that encourage people to go out. Good long perspective picture in sunset sun.
Is amazing how many points you got for this nice photo, today is difficult pass one hundred.
Well done photo in great quality.
Best regards,
Zbigniew

Dear John,
This photo was uploaded years before I joined the site. However I'm happy that I have discovered it. It is well composed, but the lights are the best.
Best Wishes,
Gy.
