2019. Walking around Maldegem after a night of snow.

View of the narrow river "De Eede"

The river Eede was a river that ran from Maldegem via Aardenburg to the Zwin, where she went to sleep at Slepeldamme. This is slightly to the north of the current Draaibrug.
The name of this river was mentioned for the first time in 1279.
The Eede was of great importance because it provided Aardenburg with a port and a hinterland, because it was also connected to De Lieve.
At Slepeldamme there was a lock where tolls were levied for the benefit of the Count of Flanders. This lock was destroyed during the Coastal Flanders Revolt in 1328. The lock was restored and the Eede was dug in 1337.
Sleeper damme disappeared, including the lock, during the inundation of 1583.
In times of threat of war, the Eede was dammed several times, in 1688, 1701 and 1745, but the dam was soon opened again.

Hallo John,
Een mooi winters plaatje. Het laag sneeuw bedekt de takken van de bomen en de hekken en de daken heel mooi. De compositie is aantrekkelijk, vooral met het beekje in het midden.

I liked the shapes of this rails and the contrast between the silver of the snow and the golden hues here and there. excellent this view. here we are facing one of the hottest summers we can remember.

Hello John,
The snow creates a cosy atmosphere as long as it is fresh and clean. It softens the colours very nicely. This is also an interesting view of the old lock in the narrow river. It's a very well exposed photo with fine sharpness.

In Vlaanderen, zo dicht bij de kust, heeft u niet vaak sneeuw denk ik? De foto is mooi, een beetje zon ontbreekt misschien. We hebben het hier erg koud, maar geen sneeuw, daar ben ik blij om, sneeuw is erg vervelend, voor mijn voeten en voor mijn auto, die op straat zonder garage moet parkeren.

The brownish tone is a vital focal point in this freezing deep snow where many tree branches, buildings and canal also draw attention. Great work keeping the whole image in proper exposure and correct white balance giving lots of depth. A great composition braving the elements, Congrats.

Hi John,
this is so beautiful! The spot is quite picturesque anyway with all the ornaments here but the snow adds such a wonderful touch here.
I see it is quite fresh so you mast have a proper winter in Belgium.
We still have no snow in England at all, in this season there was only one day with a bit of snowfall but it melted while falling.
Beautiful composition, very well spotted and I admire as well the exposition so well balanced,

Hello John,

You have had much more snow than we have experienced, yet! WE have only had snow flurries, which have not stayed on the ground long! The snow, in your photograph, makes the whole scene look like a fairytale scene!
All the features, covered with a silvery film, really look beautiful.

I like your chosen viewpoint, taking advantage of the canal as a guide and including all the lovely fencing details for interest and perspective.
As always, the photograph is very well exposed to give fine clarity of details.

Helaas zijn deze prachtige plaatjes alweer weggeregend en zijn we terug naar grauw winterweer met flinke dooi. Geef mij maar licht vriezend zonnig winterweer. Ook veel aantrekkelijker om te fotograferen, zoals we aan deze schitterende foto kunnen zien.

Hallo John,
Je hebt niets aan het toeval overgelaten en bent onmiddellijk bij de eerste gelegenheid deze winter het besneeuwde landschap ingetrokken om foto's te maken.
Er lijkt wel een redelijk dikke laag gevallen te zijn in Maldegem. Daar de sneeuw er enkel op werkdagen lag, heb ik er weinig van gemerkt ...
Heel mooi met het contrast tussen de sneeuw en de rode baksteen en even mooi wat verderop het contrast tussen de donkere takken en de sneeuw.

Hallo John, this river flows in Maldegem center. It is encircled by high walls, the water is not frozen in winter. Fresh snow covers the trees, the houses and the city walls. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.
