Photographer's Note
Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Its capital and most populous city is Minsk.
The parliament of the republic proclaimed the sovereignty of Belarus on 27 July 1990, and during the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Belarus declared independence on 25 August 1991. In 2000, Belarus and Russia signed a treaty for greater cooperation, forming the Union State.
Alexander Lukashenko has served as the country's first president since 1994. Belarus has been labeled "Europe's last dictatorship" by some Western journalists, on account of the country's poor human rights record and Lukashenko's self-described authoritarian style of government. Lukashenko continued a number of Soviet-era policies, such as state ownership of large sections of the economy. Elections under Lukashenko's rule have been widely criticized as unfair and according to many countries and organizations political opposition has been violently suppressed.
I observe with horror and great sadness the situation in belarus. After the last elections on Sunday the people awake and fight for freedom. Will they win?
Here the view from the centre of Minsk. Huge area almost empty. But as I read, now they are full of protesting people. The building is Labour Union Culture Palace, in the Independence Alley.

Hello Malgo,
How on earth could you not have posted this photo before? It's been more than four years! All right, it is slightly dark and I think I see traces of cleaning noise on the flags, but the composition, the colours and the girls with McDonald's balloons in front of the Soviet monument really makes it worth to be on TE. Even if it is not 100% technically perfect it is much more important that it is a good and extremely eye-catching composition. Both WS pictures are also very nice. I see there was a sushi restaurant in Lenin Street. ;-)
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Malgo,
The flags are an eye-catcher. You have captured well the action of the children. The point of view is showing the details of the building in the background. Have a nice day.

Hello Malgo,
your w/s give us details of the buildings but this is the photograph with heart! These two girls are delightful, playing innocently and unaware of any political struggle.
There is a fine, diagonal colour link between the red dress and the red flags.
There is lots of media attention on the situation in Belarus. There seemed to be lots of aggression towards protestors.
I wonder if the military will continue to support and protect Lukashenko against the cries for freedom from the population.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Malgo,
The testimonies of arrested protesters that I heard in the news yesterday were nothing short of shocking.
How is this possible in a European country?
The truly elected person must immediately take power. The days of dictatorships in Europe are over.
You show us here very beautiful architecture in Minsk. I mean both workshops.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Malgo,
A good impression from Belarus, when the situation was much quieter there. We will see what will happen, the protests seem to be very widespread. A good photo of the classic building in the background and the green and red flags on the left. The two small girls are well placed in the foreground of the large empty square.

Ciao Malgo,This photo is a beautiful carefree memory, but now in this square and across the country the situation is decidedly different. Decisive days to see if there will be a civil war or a bloody repression that will confirm the last European dictator. Your photos, beautiful the two WS, were an excellent opportunity to talk about this current issue. Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

Hello Malgo,
A wonderful post to draw attention to the crucial situation in Belarus. In the Netherlands we also follow the events closely and I am convinced that the people will win. And that mainly because of the Belarusian women who are clearly taking the lead in driving out this dictator.
Excellent presentation
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hello, one often hears about Belarus on the news. At the moment the President refuses to resign despite international pressure. The two children playing in that vast square symbolize the future generation of the country. A remarkable temple with columns appears in the background. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hello Malgo,
This is a lovely view from Minsk. It does look a bit dark, but the colors are still vibrant, and the young girls are cute. :-) The colors of the Belorussian flag look nice beside the attractive Culture Palace, too. I'm sad to see how the protesters in Belarus are being treated. I hope they will achieve freedom, without any more injury or loss of life. Take care!

Hello Malgo
Lovely picture which goes well with the occasion. It would have been perfect for it, except for the McDonalds logo, that sort of spoils their innocence and makes you think about the bigger political and economic issues at stake. The logo makes the picture a bit sad.
