ÔÎÒÎÃÐÀÔÈÈ

Originally the site of Trinidad's capital city, Port of Spain was an Amerindian village called Cumucarapo. The occupants, the Caribs, were nomadic and traveled between Trinidad and what is now Venezuela. The downtown area is covered with mangrove swamps when the Spanish troops occupied the village in 1560. In 1797 the Spanish surrendered Trinidad to the British.

Today Trinidad is one of the most modern islands in the Caribbean. Its population reflects the diverse cultures that settled here. Port of Spain is now one of the busiest commercial ports in the Caribbean.
