Photographer's Note

The local Hmong people around Sapa only manage one rice crop per year. So try to use every available space for growing rice. This makes make for some interesting geometry in the rice paddies the steep slopes around Sapa.

Hmong man appears to have been planting rice in the afternoon. This 'baby' rice appears to have been recently transplanted from the creche areas where the rice is initially grown until it is large and and strong enough to be transplanted. This also gives the Hmong time to weed and till the rice paddies, and hopefully time for the to other essential ingredient, rain, to come.

Hello Andy,
From your chosen POV it seems like these rice terraces were all constructed from a single point and diverge from there.
The farmer is placed very well on the picture.
A very beautiful and graphical image!

I love your portfolio of pictures and good that you are posting again. Hope to see lots more! This picture has that graphic simplicity that I love in photos. The man is perfectly placed in the frame and nothing in the image distracts. Excellent observation and a high quality picture.

Hi andy. i like the effect you created here with your composition. It is almost as if he is walking on some sort of suspended rope structure thanks to the curving walls of the fields below and your elevated POV.Great use of light which gives a sparkle to the flooded rice paddies. best wishes.
