Photographer's Note

Koh Chang is an island off the coast of Trat Province in the Gulf of Thailand. Much less developed than Koh Samui a drive down the eastern coast provides a good opportunity to see local life. This shot was taken at Baan Salak Kok. The tiny, authentic, fishing village is a far cry from the swish resorts on the western side of the island; houses are built along a series of boardwalks that snake around the canals of a mangrove forest. Red and aqua-painted fishing boats line walkways and you stroll around gives the feeling that you've really discovered something special.

The sisters pictured here lived in a humble wooden house perched on stilts above the water. A narrow wobbly walkway constructed from old planks formed the suspended pathway to their home.
