Photographer's Note

Travelling by train in Burma can be tiring, dusty, and seem never-ending. On the other hand, this gives you plenty of opportunity to talk with your fellow-passengers and its often photogenic.

Hi Elaine,
Excellent daily life shot from inside a train. The focus is perfectly on the lady with decorated cheeks. Low camera angle works well. Those chairs don't look very comfortable.

Hello Elaine,
This looks slightly more comfortable than the wooden benches of 1973, but I think the many hours from Rangoon to Mandalay would still be a long and tedious journey. The thanaka on the woman's cheeks simply screams: Burma!
It's a nice snapshot with a good light.

I agree with your note.
My longest train ride there was from Yangon to Mawlamiang . 13 hours very bumpy but amusing and I enjoyed very much the food offered by the many vendors.A good photo!, I like her tired/bored, but friendly facial expression and the vendor carying delicious snacks on her head in the distance.

Een mooie impressie van deze trein. De zittende passagier lijkt behoorlijk verveeld, terwijl anderen stonden te wachten om uit te kunnen stappen. Ze worden mooi omlijst door de blauwe banken.

Hello Elaine,

This is very much a daily life shot and along with your notes, reveals much about the travel conditions in Burma.

The seats don't look too bad but the expression on the young lady's face explains much about the tedium of the journey!

Hallo Elaine,
Ik was in 1997 in Myanmar en heb er al mijn verplaatsingen met bus en pick-up gemaakt. Geen idee dus hoe de treinen er uitzien of hoe moeilijk/oncomfortabel ze zijn.
Waarom niet per trein reizen? In die tijd werden buitenlandse reizigers afgeraden met de trein te reizen omdat de inkomsten daarvan naar de toenmalige militaire dictatuur gingen terwijl bussen en pick-ups privй bezit waren. Of het werkelijke de juiste beslissing was, weet ik niet. Zovele jaren later hebben de militairen opnieuw de macht genomen en lijkt alles terug bij het oude ... Het verergert zelfs nog met het beschieten van vreedzame betogers.
Prachtige foto van de dame met de thanaka op beide wangen.
Achteraan zien we een andere dame die heel veel voeding in een brede schotel op haar hoofd draagt.

Hi Elaine,
charming scene with a girl on the train. I suspect me being anm older man would be not east to take a photo of a young girl on the train. This is the injustice between double standards of male or femal photographers :)
