Photographer's Note

"Orang Asli" translated literally mean "Original People". They were the ethnic people of Malaya, before the word Malaysia was even coined after the Independence. Living in the tropical jungle where they are most at home, Orang Asli gathers whatever they need from the jungle. Medicine from plants and bark of trees, poison for their blow pipe from tree gum and they hunt games for food and fresh meat. They also have their own unique method of catching fish from the rivers by using traps and poison from trees called "tuba". Once game in the area becomes scarce they move on to a new location. Some antropologist traced the Orang Asli roots to the Polynesian that once proliferate in this part of the world.

Today, most of them gave up their jungle life and are given land, houses and a special reservation are set up for these indigeneous people. Their children goes to school and become professionals in the business, academic and civil sector of the industry. I happen by chance to meet up with these children and true to their upbringing they are a bunch of cheerful, inquisitive and active children. Hang out with them for a while. One girl in particular caught my eye. She's the one on the far right of this picture. What she is wearing is a sarong (an open ended tube like textile usually worn by local Malays). Originally the cloth is white in color and the flower motif (more popularly known as Batik)is hand printed onto it. Combining the two words "sarong" and "batik" that piece of cloth is called "Sarong Batik".It is usually worn from the waist down. However this girl wore it to cover her little body. Unlike her friends who had their clothes on, she had none except for the sarong. She seemed so comfortable using it. This shot was taken in a small quaint town of Kuala Kubu Baru. One has to pass the outskirt of this town in order to go up to The Fraser's Hill, a hill resort that is about one and a half hours drive from Kuala Lumpur.

PS: I have posted another pic in Workshop showing the little girl in Sarong.
