Photographer's Note

In 2003, I joined two Lao guides who were surveying part of Nale district to try and find trails and villages that would be suitable to develop as eco-tourism treks.

We visited several villages in the hills high above the river, where local villagers reported never to have had a foreign visitor before. We were invited by the village headman to spend the night in his house. I photographed him and his family, and a few local children hanging around. When people saw the pictures on my camera, they lost their reticence and were keen to be photographed.
After dinner, the headman asked if the next day I could photograph every family in the village. I said I was happy to do so, but we were pressed for time (a long uphill hike ahead of us that day), could the families be ready for me in the morning?
They were,
When we got outside after breakfast, every family was gathered together outside their houses. most were posing in formal groups, this family was a bit more relaxed.
