Photographer's Note
Stone lanterns at Nara in Japan, an important historic town south of Kyoto. I've sharpened the oof fg, and added density to the oe highlights. Also desaturated the blue sign at left.
I think this was at Kasuga Taisha. Will come back & edit. Cannot get into Google right now.
Edit: "Few things are simpler but more quaintly enchanting than the stone lanterns padding the walking path leading up to world reknown UNESCO World Heritage Site Kasuga Shrine in Nara Park. In fact, one of the reasons why Kasuga Shrine is famous is because it has some of the oldest bronze and stone lanterns, called Toro, in all of Japan. Toro were originally created as religious elements for temples and shrines, but today they are used in Japanese gardens more for their beauty." Source:

Hi Chris
wonderful shot of these Kasuga lanterns. So perfectly sharp, detailed and textured. Looks like a few have been around for quite a number of years here, the moss adds that little touch of colour and magic. Excellent!
Regards - Brian.

Hi Chris,
The trees are framing well the lanterns. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the Nara stone lanterns. The afternoon light is giving nice tints to the colors. Have a nice day.

So Chris - All these lanterns are in situ .. what a sight and so beautiful with the lichens and mosses growing all over them. Fascinating shot, the green leafy backdrop is super blending in nicely without distracting. Warm regards rosemary

Hi Chris, There are so many stone lanterns in Nara, and specially in kasuga Taisha. In the Temple there were also other lanterns. Nice view with the moss covering the stone. Superb composition.

Good Morning Chris,
I like how you have positioned the tallest lantern in the immediate f/g where it provides fine textural and sculptural details and makes a fine lead to the vast array of other lanterns.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hi Chris
An interesting site and a fine picture of it! I like how these stone lanterns are tight, pleasantly filling the frame. Compo and POV are fine too with good balance of this image.

Hi Chris
What an amazing subject, I love the lichen that covers over the stone lanterns and the beautiful textures. I probably would have cloned out the white sign in the left foreground, but that's just a small nitpick.
Thanks for sharing, have a great day.
Best regards

Hello Chris,
Fabulous sight of the many stone lanterns, same pattern but each is a bit different.
Green moss adorned as a cap or a hat atop of some.
Fine picture, DOF and clarity.
Have a nice weekend,
Ike
