Photographer's Note

She is going to collect her wages for the day's work. She is carrying a sack of recyclable rubbish, which she has laboriously collected in the streets of Ahmedabad. The women will carry anything upto 25 kilos... Many of the women will pay 10 rupees to send it back to their homes on a pedal rickshaw and get a bus home. This will cost them 13rupees (10 for the rickshaw, 3 for the bus back home). Others will carry it back on their heads..their homes are 3km away from the collecting areas. Each woman will earn 50-70rupees per day...this is less than Ј1.00. This income will generally stretch to support entire families of 4-6+.

I like this blue color very much. You managed perfectly the difficult lighting conditions here. The humen stregth of these women is unbeleivable.

Great scene nicely seen "from behind" and really fine composition. Like the feeling of taking breath at the sight of the huge load the woman is carrying and panicked thought: is the door wide enough ? The dog seems to have no doubt however - patiently waiting for the passage to be free. Great light playing as well...

She does indeed look overloaded, and also like she is having a bit of a problem with the door.
A very good shot with good light, quite good that she is blocking for anymore sunlight to enter the room. The blue color on the wall is a great frame for this shot.

Another great documentary shot Kaj. Fabulous light, beautifully managed. And the blue of the walls provides a wonderful cooling effect to the harsh heat of the outside world. My only gripe would be that she appears a little to central. Best regards, Roberto

Marvellous shot, Kaj, filled with strength... that load IS a load, ah my God, that is not just a bag, that is a giant rock on her head! In fact it almost reminds me of shots of those rare rock formations that exist in some narrow valleys, trapped within two boulders...
A fantastic tribute to this powerful, beautiful woman, by a photographer mighty and powerful herself...

Hi Kaj,
I could tell it was one of yours from the thumbnail, it's very you. Beautiful colors, great control of the light, good subject. All good really!
I don't know you and some other manage to get this type of shots: I guess that the contrast between the highlights and the shadows in the room must be huge, yets everything is renders perfectly.

Another really good one Kaj. A kind of simple composition, but one which works really well. the way the sack is bumping right up against the top of the frame does well in emphasizing its size. The dogs is a good detail too. Nice photo.

I loved this shot particularly the way you used the POV. Hiding woman's face was a nice idea. The bluw surroundings look great.
