Road to Lahic, a photo from Ismayilli, Shirvan

Photographer's Note

The road to Lahic leads through a deep river canyon surrounded by steep cliffs. The drive is very scenic with breathtaking views and perilous drops but the road is relatively wide and safe compared to many other mountain roads I have been on.

I travelled from Sheki to Ismayilli in a marshrutka (minibus) and then, too impatient to wait 3 hours for the next marshrutka and pestered by business-hungry taxi owners, by an old Lada without seat belts and a driver who pointed to me the place (and resulting scars on his face) where he had tumbled down the cliff while driving several years earlier.

This time I made sure the photo conveys the scale of this magnificient landscape and waited patiently (the traffic is not exactly that of Piccadilly Circus) for a vehicle to appear on the road.

In WS two more images of the gorge and surrounding mountains on the way to Lahic. Taking those photos I just couldn't help thinking how spectacular those places must look in the autumn with all the trees covered in red and yellow foliage.
But that's for the next trip to Azerbaijan... ;-)

zdravo Kasia. It is a formidable landscape and puts even the truck into insignificance. Just as well most drivers imbibe only in tea.The vegetation really stands out in all that slate grey.The workshop photos show a much greener topography. Ugodna nedjelja. Klaudio.

Trиs impressionnante cette route creusйe dans la montagne. Je n'aimerais pas beaucoup rencontrer un camion sur cette route sans garde fou. Le point de vue est parfait et le cadrage excellent.

Spectacular. Not so much the photograph actually, but certainly the location! I'm very glad you included the patch of trees on the right. I'm looking forward to your Autumn series... It's your travelling that has me in awe.

Hi Kasia

Looking well at the lorry, it seems that the road is not very large and I feel there is only one track! The nature is amazing with the vertical layers, but some trees can still live.
Minimalist but really effective.

Hello Kasia,
From this distance the road looks absolutely horrifying, but I take your word for it that it was reasonably safe :-). It was certainly worth waiting for that truck and you found a good spot where the bushes form a fine green triangle on the grey rock. The workshops photos are very beautiful too, but this view is the most spectacular and awesome. Your story reminds me of my journey to Bhutan where my guide at one point "amused" me by pointing out where his car had once veered off the road and fallen 30 meters into a river. I think he said that only one of the tourists had to be taken to hospital ;-).

Wow whata a awful image at all but I know this is a silk road, right? Great and so precious image via so clear and outstndingly sharp macro shot.
I like this well considerd composition so much, mastreful work as usual.

fascinating shot this. Hey! it does not look that wide to me! I can understand the appeal and beauty of travelling through this place and this shot gives us a superb impression of its drama. But I would not be able to travel on that road, so I applaud your sense of adventure and bravery! Amazing image!

Woa, you say that this road was wide? I don't want to know how the other roads looked like. The lorry really gives a great sense of scale here and I suppose the accident rate must be quite high on these roads.

I love the simplicity with tremendous impact! really shows the resourceful nature of man and makes an interesting picture showing us a great image from this dramatic land formation. I like the way how the tiny blue truck takes the eye through the scene smoothly with wonderful dof at the same time balances the color really well. Fine shot and tfs

I loved reading your note and admiring how brave you were! I wouldn't do the sort of travelling that you do although there were one or two in India that I would have rather not been on. A fabulous picture giving scale to the cliff face. Thanks for the excellent WS too.

The image really give a strong sense of remote and out of this world kind of feeling. Excellent shot a place that is not very well known. Thanks for showing us part of the world not many has been.
