Photographer's Note
Carriera Tripiera is Occitan for rue Tripière, in the city of Toulouse, which has maintained its Occitan heritage and language by having street signs and all signs in its Metro system in the two languages, and reflects the very individualistic nature of France's fourth largest city, with its strong Spanish influence. Friends in Toulouse told me that very few people speak the language in the street, however.
An earlier photo, uploaded in 2009, from 'The Pink City' was taken while standing in the popular and trendy shopping street, Rue de Saint-Rome. A few metres away from that location I found the tiny street of rue Tripière, almost mid-way between the Pont Neuf and the large Capitole square. This year I took my camera into the narrow lanes which wind their way around this area.
According to Wikipedia 'the name Occitan comes from lenga d'òc (i.e. òc language), which comes from òc, the Occitan word for yes.' It is still understood in much of southern France, Catalonia (where it's an official language) and even Calabria in Italy. In the mid-19th century about 40% of the French population were Occitan speakers, but that proportion has dwindled to about 6% today. One of the many descendants of Latin, it is well over 1000 years old and most closely related to Catalan among existing Romance languages.

Hello Andrew ,
A pretty view of a typical street of Toulouse . I like the effect of the wide angle , and the curve of the pavement . Of course , the bike is a strong element in the composition .
Your note is very interesting . If you want to hear people speaking Occitan , You have to go to the little villages in the countryside . But most of them are more than 50 years old .

Hi Andrew
A simple though very pleasantly composed shot
I like the bike at the left FG to introduce our eye into the image, the curve of the paved street, excellent management of shadows and high lights, the sky not overexposed...
The eye strolls smoothly into the image from FG to BG
have a nice day

Hi Andrew, nice work. Inclusion of the bike, nicely in the corner and slightly distorted by the WA works well, and the curve of the cobbled street works well too. Timing was great, with the pedestrian in just the right spot. Cheers, Steve

Hi Andrew,
Simple, good composition, right lighting. Thanks for your note. It's quite difficult to meet people who know the òc language. My language, catalan, is very very similar to the oc. In fact I can talk in catalan with a person speaking òc ! And Frederic Mistral, Nobel Prize winner for literature, french nationality, but his books written in òc !!

Hello Andrew,
I like this view with the curved lines converging in the centre and the look up the narrow street to the left. The restaurant looks cosy with its fine flowers, and even the parked bicycle looks pretty. At least it is well placed within the compoisition.

Hello Andrew,
An attractive composition with a lovely atmosphere to it. I like very much how you have framed it including the bicycle. The beautifully rendered cobbled pavement draws the viewer into the scene inviting us to take a table outside the restaurant or follow the young lady.

this is a nicely balanced composition. The thin line of pavement bricks leads us into the picture and we can imagine enjoying strolling along this small street. The bike angled to the bottom corner anchors the compo. The bright basket of flowers hangs at on the one thirds line.

Hello Andrew,
One of my favorite aspects of old towns in Europe is the spontaneous way the cities proliferated, according to the topography of the land. You find these curved roads, and perspective have them curving away and converging. Here what works well is that the light illuminates part of the scene, putting it in a limelight. But you've managed the light well, avoiding any stark contrasts. It is very close to the way our eyes perceive light and shadows, rather than the automatic exposure on cameras.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hi Andrew
Beautiful rustic wide angle street scape, wonderful natural colours and I rather like the brick pavement and the little gutter running down the middle. Also like the bike parked against the sign post giving the scene extra character. Nicely taken Andrew, still using the Pentax I see, I love mine too!
Have a great day and the rest of the week.

Hi Andrew,
I like the wide angle perspective of this shot, and the way the path leads the eyes upwards. This photo is very inviting--it makes me want to visit this place and sit at that restaurant to take in the surroundings. Good sharpness and use of natural light.
Thanks for sharing!

Hello Andrew,
I enjoyed finding out about Occitan, a completely new word to me. I rather admire the French spirit, prepared to stand up for their rights and customs. My brother-in-law lives in Brittany where all the place names are written in two languages, French and Breton.
A lovely, intimate shot of French ambience. The abandonned bike, strong in the composition, adds to the laisez-faire mood. The patterned texture of the road leads the viewer naturally around the curve into the narrow passageway, towards the next focal images. Good human interest in this strong composition.
Have a good day,
Bev :-)

Hello Andrew,
These medievally looking, curved and narrow lanes represent the historic atmosphere of this old city very well. The shot, containing such nice elements, as the good old architecture, bike, flowers and other street-design components has excellent composition, well balanced contrast between light and shadow, beautiful colors and perfect quality. Absolutely masterful job!

Bonjour Andrew,
A restaurant which seems very sympathetic for the meals between in love, I like much these pedestrian streets and the calm one which characterizes them. The wide-angle lens is effective to give here much of depth to the image and space too. The bicycle on the left decorates agreeably the urban landscape. Beautiful and interesting photograph on this district of Toulouse, thank you Andrew.

HI Andrew
Firstly, the use of the Occitan dialect in your title and Note is fascinating. When I sawe the names, I thought they were Italian, so reading about the Spanish influence, and knowing how these countries influenced each other, is not a big surprise. The street is so characteristic. I like how you've included that French icon, the bicycle in the left corner, although on my monitor the far left FG seems a little dark (vignetting or just the shade?) You really managed the extremes of light superbly. And the image is perfectly sharp with rich colours and contrasts. Great job, TFS and I hope you have a happy day. Was "speaking" to Santo, I might be in Melbourne over the Chrissy break. If you're around, it'd be lovely to catch up, even if it's for a drink or a feed.
Warm regards

Hi Andrew,
one nice urban scene in these Toulouse's old streets, caught in an effective framing, which offers us a very special atmosphere and an interesting architecture.
I like the incorporation of the bicycle in foreground, and the graphism that the textures of the pavement add, in a well structured and dynamic composition, with good perspective.
Well done.

Hi Andrew,
Very good POV, it gives me that feeling of just walking on this cobble stone street and turning the corner to see the restaurant in this small charming street. That is the charm of many European cities. The bike is a good addition to show the way of getting around in the quaint little place. Good technical quality as always and good composition.
Happy 2011!

Hi Andrew,
I love this kind of shots which give desire to visit the city. I added it in my theme "typical streets".
I lived for 1 year in this city and I find again its loveliness in your shot. So lovely these streets with paving stones, with the famous color pink color which makes the fame of this city. Perfect composition, good use of the wide lens with this bicycle in the foreground and a good depth with this street which guides our glance. The icing on the cake is the woman presence who walks, perfectly positioned.
All is really good for me in this shot. The sharpness and the light are great. Beautiful. More I look at it and more I like it.
Good work.
Have a nice day.

Your use of wide angle really came into its own here suiting the shot perfectly to include the bicycle on the corner (very photogenic), and the curvy lines leading us into this charming small street and taking us on a journey past the restaurant and small shops, and your image makes us keep wondering what lies beyond the next curve ahead.
