Photographer's Note
After posting the necropolis of Hierapolis, I thought of this exceptional one too.
Myra was founded in the 5th century BC, the most important city of Lycia, an antique city in what is now Antalya, very near the modern city of Demre, once the home of St Nicholas .
Nowadays, it's especially famous for its necropolis of Lycian rock-cut tombs in the form of temple fronts carved into the vertical faces of the cliffs.
When I took this picture, it was midday !!! Que calor !!! But we were listening to the guide in the shade thank goodness !
We were facing the necropolis to the left as you can see and the theatre to the right (WS4 and WS1), built in the 2nd century AD in Greek and Roman styles.
It was richly decorated by many sculptures of masks like the one in the foreground. They represented theatrical scenes and mythological figures.
WS6 : A more complete view of the rock-cut tombs.
WS5 : The permanent residents of the necropolis.
WS4 : View taken from the same place as on the main post, but focusing to the right on the theatre in the background.
WS3 : Another one of the many sculptures, once part of the theatre decoration.
WS2 : Yet another series of theatrical masks.
WS1 : The theatre

Bonjour MarieLouise,
Of course this is exptional, as every ancient preserved and endured ruins from more than 2000 years ago.
You applied a good premeditated POV with the rock-carved dwelings on far hill, and the mighty pillars lay near the main subject, which by itself an impressive one.
Good photojob done. My cong.'s.

Hello MarieLouise,
I'm sure you stood and wondered at these masks and marvelled at the skill of these ancient craftsmen! What fine results from people with primitive tools!
I like how you have given us such a detailed close-up, so that we can appreciate the shapes and the textures. Your bit of shade has stopped the sculpture from being blown out but the b/g tells how bright the sunshine really was.
Have a great day,
Bev :-)

Bonjour Marie-Louise,

Hello Marie-Louise,
You give us a fine collection of three intersting and beautiful photos. As a composition this is for sure the best one by combining the expressive sculptures with a view of the distant tombs. The cultural richness of this place becomes obvious in just one shot. Considering the heat and strong light you have exposed this remarkably well.
Kind regards,
Gert

Bonjour MarieLouise ~
Thanks to this photograph, I have just discovered your gallery, and I am so pleased that I did :)
This stone would be remarkable just by itself, but I really love your POV, with the echoes of other stone carvings further back, and then back behind that, what looks like the stones themselves, in their natural state. The jumble of stones in between lets us know, that in the end, nature will win over our artistic aspirations :)
This is so pleasing to the eye for so many reasons, not the least the expressions on the faces here. The depth of field, with softening colors and increasing sunlight, is wonderful.
Beautifully seen & captured ~ and nice to meet you :)

Hello Marie-Louise,
Well my husband & I are back from a long 9 week holiday including the magical Country of Turkey - what an amazing Country...
I hope this brief message finds you & your family well?
I love the old ruins & history of the Ancient Cities - your photo depicts some of the intricate stone work that was achieved with the use of primitive tools.
Kindest regards,
Dawn.

Hi Marie Louise,
What ugly faces, what a beautiful photo! Excellent DOF, the Lycian rock tombs in the b/g are sharp enough. Good light management, too. You managed not to wash out the sunny parts though your main (ugly) subject was in the shade.
As for your comment on Marabout de Sidi Abderrahmane, you are right. I just did not have the heart to crop out the elegant creature soaring in the sky.
Regards,
MT
BTW, did I mention that those masks are ugly?

Complimenti.

Hello MarieLouise
I had seen pictures of these tombs earlier in some pictures...but composing with the sculptures in the FG definitely brings in more balance to the picture. Its admirable how you handled the contrasting light & shade, which makes this picture a pleasure to look at. Its your trademark to enriuch this post with the fine workshops and the note all of which allowed me to learn much more than what I knew before
Best Regards
Angshu

Ciao Marie Louise
Romano

Hello Marie-Louise,
Thank you for the improved picture of the murals in the Rila monastery.
What a wonderful double vision of the sculptures on the FG and the tombs in the rocks on the BG. Both are worth a picture and a post on TE. Here you show us a splendid combination picture, including many fallen columns. The framing with the dark leaves is excellent.
Very good light management, sharpness and composition.
Best regards, Paul

Boas cores e nitidez!
Parabéns!
