Photographer's Note

In the night it had snowed all throughout Spiti. Evidence of this overnight snow was clear in the crevices & mountain slopes around Kye monastery, where we visited in the morning. As the day progressed, the sun became progressively stronger, so much so to create sun burn on our bare hands & face! The snow in the mountain crevices also melted.

The melted snow created puddles on the road. After having ‘parked myself for more than an hour in ‘Rangrik’ village to capture the beauty of the setting sun on the Kye monastery, it was time for us to return to our Guesthouse in Kaza

As our car passed one of the puddles on the un-tarred road between Rangrik & Kaza, I could not but help notice the fantastic reflection of the snow capped mountain peak & the hint of the late sunlight on the higher reaches of the peak. I stopped the car & ran back towards the puddle. It was already dark this side of the mountain, as the sun slowly eased down on the other side. The water in the puddle was still ‘rippling’, disturbed by our car which passed over it. I waited till the water became calm & the reflection became perfect....before I took this shot

Nice shot you propose to us. This photo is telling a full story with the car leaving the frame on the left side and with the piece of water in foreground and the snow on the tops to tell how wild this place can be.

Well, you pointed out that darkness had fallen, so I don't have to mention it :-)
Despite the relative darkness we can still make out all necessary details on the hillside and, what's much more important, the fine reflection of the snowy peak is very clearly seen. I understand your eagerness to capture this view. I quite like the inclusion of the car as well. It helps to give us an idea of the place and its dimensions.

It looks like it will be a very cold night.
The road and the adjacent mountain side are dark but the puddle in the road surface still shows a well lit reflected snowcapped mountain. I like the light in the puddle and the warmer tones of the mountain top and the cloud in the reflections.
Good you included that other car.

Hi Angshu,

You found a strong composition here, with the car going away; balanced, on the other side, by the mountain and its fantastically clear reflection. The contrasts are superb. The overall darkness enhances marvellously the luminous snowy top. The perspective is good and creates a good dynamic, with the mountain that seems to stretch till the horizon.

Hello dear Angshuman-san,

The overall bluish tone is very nice. And the rugged terrain and a puddle of water on the path, snow capped mountain nearby are nicely contained in the reflection. I first thought that the car in the view left you behind. I am very glad to find that this was not the case. The depicted environment looks very hostile. At such altitude, it is almost expected of it. The view is very realistically taken. This is indeed a very rare view. Thank you for the photo; one must realize how rare it is for us to be able to appreciate an image like this.

The reflections on the water are assets to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the mountains. The early evening light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

you have combined skillfully the weak light of the evening with the beauty of these mountains covered with snow, and with its reflections on the water of the puddle in this un-tarred road.
You have seen that here there was a good photo, and you hoped that the puddle became calm to use it as a natural mirror.

perfect use of the water puddle. The composition is fantastic. I like the diagonal lines which meet together near the car. Difficult light yet perfectly used by you and turned to your advantage.

Seems like a rough terrain to travel, with the naked landscape, bumpy roads and snow nearby...!

Hi Angshu,

At first I thought it seem a bit too dark especially the foreground, but I think you did the best with it, the darkness really bring out the details int he reflection. You certain have found a wonderful little puddle to get the reflection so perfectly. The snow mountain is crystal clear with great sharpness and constrast between the snow and rocks.

Excellent observation and perfectly executed shot.
