And last one of this series for now!

Once again I returned to Lazarim. This is one of the most Portuguese Shrovetide celebrations in Portugal. It takes place in Lazarim, a village in the mountains, near Lamego. Here, on Tuesday, the "caretos" (people wearing a mask like this one and also costumes) come to the street to show their originality. These masks are sculpted on alder wood, by a few artisans in the village. It takes many hours to do a mask like this one. Most part of the participants have a new mask every year because there is a contest for the best masks and also for the best "caretos", which includes the costume. The masks may have horns, moustache, snakes...

Long time no hear, but live is keeping me busy and with not getting any notification mails from TE anymore the site has simply slowly slipped from my mind.

One has to admire the craftsmanship in creating these wonderful masks indeed. Do you know the origins of this festival? Has it something to do with chasing winter away like carnival in our parts? The masked figures seem really at home amongst the old wall and shrubbery in this scene. While focus is clearly on the figure in the front, it is the strategically well positioned and half hidden figure in the back that makes this scene come together really.

Hello Ana,
All of these photos have been very carefully taken, amusing and colourful. These two persons are posing well and I like that the red one is partly hiding behind the trees. That gives the photo a good balance and great contrasts of colours, as well as creating some kind of suspense.

incrнvel esta aqui, parece que hб um demфnio а espreita ao fundo. muito bons detalhes e qualidade de imagem. a atmosfera mitolуgica ficou bem acentuada. um evento especial e bem fotografado e divulgado por vc.
