Another mountaineer's view of the popular Lake Louise area. This is a close-up of the Victoria Glacier, the well-known and much photographed bright stripe of ice and snow that creates the backdrop of the lake.
The image was taken during an attempted ascent of North Victoria. The peak on the left is Mount Lefroy (3423 m), separated by Mount Victoria (3464 m) on the right by the Abbot Pass (2922 m). In this pass resides the Abbot Hut run by the Alpine Club of Canada. The tongue of ice that climbs to this pass, the upper part of which is visible in this image is affectionately known as "The Death Trap" because of the frequent rock and ice fall. Usually, the ascent to the hut follows the opposite side of the pass.
The fine texture of the relatively hard snow covering the glacier, as well as the crevasses are clearly visible in this image.
The difference in color between the fresh white snow in the upper parts of the mountain and the reddish old snow that was covered by fine rock debris carried by the wind is very obvious in the early morning light.
