Great torben 2006-05-05 16:53

A very good composition filled with movement, diagonals and triangles - lots of triangles that interlock and help to define a moment within the movement.
And then there is the slightly sickening backwards bent of her index-finger contrasting all the straight lines of the composition.
I find the strong contrast a bit too much, the shadows almost looks like they were filled in with black ink, hard edges almost no gradients.

Default To torben: Triangles

Thx for telling me about the triangles that I didn't notice myself.

As for the contrast, I understand your point. But personally I don't mind it too much as I like the contrasts between the black shadows and the white cigarettes.

Have a nice weekend :)

I have nothing against hard contrast per se, but I don't like the way the shadows seems to strangle the girl in the background, just look at the two big blotches of black, looking like ink-aliens, closing in on her neck. The edge of the shirtcuff in the lower right doesn't look too good either.

On second tought, I might dislike the hard contrast here because it reveals that no part of the photo is in focus.
Hard contrast should show sharp details somewhere, there is no sharpness at all in this photo, and the hard contrast has changed the soft gradients of out-of-focus into blocky areas of single tone.

I still like the captured moment and the composition, they are both very good. But the technique could be better, even if the aim was expressive use of bad technique, which can be very interesting too.

Very good point! I noticed the shadows before but didn't think that deep about them. I think that problem around the her neck was due to the my poor B&W conversion and contrast adjustments.

And you're right about the lack of focus but that's one of the things I was trying out. When I shot the picture I was using manual focus and I tried to make it fairly soft, because I want to get a good feeling of bright objects surrounded by dark backgrounds. (and I was looking at Caravaggio's paintings before hand...he paintined people surrounded by darkness)

Thanks for your words,
