Good Morning Everyone,
Yesterday, I showed a very old building in Cologne, today, it is a very much more modern building.
This is the railway station in Cologne. I was wowed by this construction. On a sunny day, as it was when we were there, the light streams through the honeycomb roof and makes wonderful shadow patterns. Anyone who knows me will know that I just love light and shadows in a photograph! Yes, I loved it!
We were only on an afternoon's exploration of the city and didn't actually travel on a train but this was one busy station. Our guide told us that over 1,000 trains a day pass through!
If you would like to know more of the history of the station an Internet link here will give you lots of information. You will have to follow the 'read more' prompt.
Thank you for stopping by.
I wish you all a happy day, Bev :-)

una struttura molto bello e ben fotografata.
C'è un bellissimo gioco di luci e ombre sui ferri della costruzione, ma anche sul terreno.

Great capture of this massive railway station, which I seem to remember stands almost next door to the cathedral? I like the point of view and the particular emphasis given to the roof with its wonderful geometric lines. Also, the play of light across the platforms and far wall. Thanks for sharing.

Do not worry Beverly, I do not have a picture similar to this... I did not enter the RR station, though saw the place from a near by location.
Beautifully taken the platforms under variable shades, created a magnificent effect with the iron-structure above.
Superb clear shot, well managed the depth, vibrant place and so busy with trains.

Hello Beverley, an interesting image here on TE where 90 per cent of the images are landscapes. Good angle on the shot that allows you to get the roofs too. Lovely shades. Well done.

as a semi-local resident, I may emphasize that this is outstanding in several aspects:
1) You have accidentally been there at the right time of day. This location is very well know among friends of railway photography, but the results depend much on selection of the right hour. And you just come over from UK, shoot it, and: wow!
2) You chose a very high perspective, with the most upper field of the roof covering almost 50 percent of image area.
3) You managed to omit trains, which is not quite easy...
For comparision, please look at http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Europe/Germany/photo1412395.htm, taken inside Cologne Main Station only a few hours after my wallet was stolen, I hope you still own yours.
Regards from Rhineland

Peut-être très moderne comme construction mais avec un sens esthétique certain qui ressemble un peu aux verrières britanniques d'une autre époque. La gare est peut-être très occupée, mais pour le moment , les trains sont rares.

I love this composition. You have given due regard to the wonderful glass and metal structure. We can see its shadows not only on the paving but on the white partition to the left. Like the architecture, your photo is graphically pleasing.

this does look like an impressive structure and all the more so from this POV and in this light. Wonderful symmetry and glorious shadows that add depth and scale to the image. I can see why you liked this place because the effect is a bit special. I like it too!

i've been in this Station a few times, but always in a hurry, always changing Trains. I never saw it in that beuty!
The light Management is well done!

I look at this and the first thing that comes to mind is how it must look in monochrome!
I think it would suit it well, no?
its so sweet how the Iron seems to climb up the frame like a ladder.
there also seems to be an 'infinity' feeling to it because of the compo you chose, as if the structure just keeps on going and going.
lovely shot Bev

Hi bev, Very attractive view pof this railway station, so similar to Calatrava's Oriente. The columns look like big palm trees. Superbly composed shot.
jemaflor (103749) 2013-08-08 3:48
Nice view with an interesting effect between light and shadows, Good angle, well captured.

Lovely photo of this railway station in Cologne. As you say as a lover of light and shadow in a photograph, you have certainly done a good job here. The shadows are projected really well on the concrete of the platforms.Nice composition .

Hello Bev - Although this is a modern construction it harks back to the time of the great railway station projects of the Victorian era. Perhaps this is not so highly decorative but the sweeping lines of the arches and the number of glass panes certainly echo the past. A superb construction and your shot emphasises the scale of the place very well. Warm regards Rosemary

A very modernistic and attractive pattern here! Maybe we can enjoy this architecture around the end of September when we intend to make a train trip from Gothenburg to Paris (via Cologne).

Intéressante construction moderne, effet graphique dans un jeu de lumière, bon format et réalisation

Yes, this is a different scene from your previous one of Cologne Cathedral but it is also a delightful one. Nice to know that one can take photographs in railway stations in Germany whereas in Britain it is certainly frowned upon and many people have had their collars felt by those in authority for trying to do so.
Not only is your composition excellent, the lines of the platform adges making fine diagonals across the lower part of the picture, but the curving lines of the glass panelled iron canopy above make for a very graphic image. And I love the shadows of all the ironwork on the ground too. The inclusion of a large group of people at the building in the distance adds depth to the image as well as giving some human interest and a fine sense of scale.
Lovely light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite depth of field and sharpness.

I'm with you, I love the play of light & shade, and you captured a beautiful moment here to showcase it! Fantastic graphic appeal from that aspect, as well as the shapes, lines and patterns created from this design...almost like a giant spider web of imagery. Amazing how much traffic there is through this station, and you caught a completely clear shot along the quais, outstanding! :) I really enjoy how you've composed this, as the perspective appears to open wide going from the bottom to the top of the frame, expanding out to envelop the viewer. Keenly realized and justly presented. Thanks for providing this delightful look around the station. Have a great day ahead.

so you were in Cologne?I hope you liked it!
Excellent composition of the roof construction of the Main station in Cologne(I see it everyday commuting to work:)
I really like this lovely, atmospheric light coming through the roof as well as the geometric shapes and patterns of the glas&steel roof construction.
Have a nice sunday
