Photographer's Note

This is the First Church of Christ, Scientist, home church of the Christian Science religion, founded by Mary Baker Eddy in the second half of the 19th century. The religion in fact has little to do with science, and our guide for a tour of the church said that the question they are most often asked is whether they are the same as Scientology (they're not!). The old church is the smaller building in front, with a relatively short, square tower; this was built in 1894. The much larger church behind it was added in the early 1900s.

Inside a buliding next to the churches is a room, the Mapparium, which consists of a stained glass globe about 30 feet high, which you stand inside of; it is painted with a map of the world dating from 1935 --- just before World War II and, subsequently, independence movements in much of Africa and Asia, greatly changed the map of the world. If you are in the area, it is well worth a stop.

The reflecting pool in the foreground also belongs to the church, and covers a large underground parking lot.
