Photographer's Note

The Mezquita-Iglesia de El Salvador is a church in Toledo, Spain. In the days of the Moslem occupation it was a mosque. The date of its construction has not been determined, although several researchers date it as the 9th century.

Initially it was a mosque and is therefore oriented south-east, in the direction of Mecca. It survived the conquest of Toledo by Christian armies in 1085, to be turned into a church in 1159. One of the most characteristic elements of the church is the Visigothic pilaster, with intricate relief carvings.
